Optical Filters for Drone Applications

18 September 2024

Filters are common in landscape photography. They help photographers craft images that wouldn’t be possible otherwise. For example, filters can cut reflections that are impossible to remove, permit longer exposures or wider apertures, and even provide a boost to the contrast of an image.

Drones generally have gimbals and highly stabilized camera systems and rugged lenses etc. But it would still need to have proper filtering for many aspects of getting proper images and videos like removing over brightness, color clarity, lessen the distortions etc. This blog covers some of the filters offered by Midopt (Midwest Optical Systems) to improve the quality of Drone photography.

MidOpt® offer a series of optical filters that improve the quality of drone imaging. The filters are robustly designed to address multiple problems that can arise in imaging with aerial photography.

Color & Light Enhancement: Filters like Neutral Density (ND) filters help reduce color saturation in images and also help reduce the amount of light entering the lens, making them more visually appealing and easier to analyze. This is particularly useful in applications such as agricultural monitoring.

Reduced Distortions: Filters can help reduce distortions such as motion blur, chromatic aberration, blooming and lens flares, which can degrade image quality. By minimizing these distortions, optical filters contribute to producing more accurate and reliable data.

Glare Reduction and UV and IR Filtering: Filters can reduce glare and block ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) light, which can interfere with image quality and analysis. UV and IR-Block filters help in producing more accurate color representation and preventing issues like color distortion.

Protective Windows are also ideal for use in Aerial imaging applications. They can be combined with a Bandpass filters to help protect the lens. Protective Windows are available in various substrates such as industrial glass, acrylic and sapphire, and are also available with A/R (anti-reflection) Oleophobic (anti-oil, water and smudge) coatings.

Environmental Adaptability: Some optical filters are designed to address imaging problems caused by the natural environment. For example, Neutral Density (ND) filters are used to control exposure levels in bright sunlight, while thermal imaging filters enable drones to capture thermal data for applications like search and rescue or building inspections.

Specialized Applications: Certain optical filters are designed for specialized applications, such as multispectral and hyperspectral imaging. These filters enable drones to capture data beyond the visible spectrum, allowing for applications in agriculture, environmental monitoring, and scientific research.
